The purpose of Holy is to heal away damage, and the purpose of Discipline is to keep damage from happening so that it doesn’t need to be healed away.

All said and done, when the day is over, any player that knows their class is still better than someone in all epic gear who doesn’t. But for two players (Priests, one Disc and one Holy) in identical Tier gear at the same skill level, Blizzard favors the latter, the gear bonuses seeming more pointed to help them out then the diligent Priests holding fast to the beloved Disc tree.
